MAIN STREET LORAIN SUPPORTS THE PURPLE RIBBON CAMPAIGN DOWN BROADWAY AVENUE

Kurt Hernon/ October 6, 2020/ New Businesses/ 0 comments

Purple ribbons line the sidewalks down Broadway Avenue in Lorain as part of the Genesis House campaign for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

In 1981, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence introduced October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Along with creating more awareness for not only victims, but to help unify family and friends that have been affected by this crime.

“When the Genesis House asked for our support, the committee whole-heartily said how can we help create awareness,” said Main Street Lorain president, Kurt Hernon and owner of Speak of the Devil.  “The Genesis House asked if we could help call to action with their purple ribbon campaign down Broadway on our new flower pots, the light poles and streetscapes.  The board of directors agreed and the City of Lorain gave the final approval.”

Domestic violence is a crime that is often done in private.  The October purple ribbon campaign reminds survivors that there are people here to help and to batterers that this is an unacceptable behavior.  Every year, around 10 million people become victims of domestic violence, about 20 people every minute. In Lorain County, there have been more domestic homicides in the past 6 months than in the past 3 years.

“We want to help be a beacon of light for those not sure where to turn, we hope the purple ribbons are a reminder that Lorain cares and we’re here for you,” Hernon said.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
The Genesis House, Lorain County’s only domestic violence shelter, has multiple county-wide campaigns and awareness events running this month and a new exciting education and prevention effort to announce this Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month was first introduced in 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. It was created not only to bring more awareness but to connect and unify the millions of victims and their loved ones that had been affected due to this crime.

Every year, around 10 million people become victims of domestic violence, about 20 people every minute. In Lorain County, there have been more domestic homicides in the past 6 months than in the past 3 years.

This crime is often done in private; October is our opportunity to be loud with our efforts and remind survivors that we see them, we are here to help and we care. It is also an opportunity to remind batterers that this behavior is unacceptable, we see them and we are dedicated to holding them accountable.
